Xiaomi Mi Pro Power Bank vs Mophie Powerstation Plus XL

While travelling around the world, there have been occasions where I’ve gone days without access to a charging station or regular power supply.

My trips around West Africa, particularly in certain rural areas, has often proved challenging when it comes to charging all my electronics due to the erratic power supply.

And as someone who is on the web frequently via my laptop and phone, this proved to be rather frustrating to my travel experience.

Thankfully, the genius invention of the power bank (or portable charger as it’s commonly referred to) has allowed me to charge my phone, laptop and camera on the go; even without a plug!

I’ve tried and tested a plethora of power banks in my time and there’s always two that I recommend to anyone who asks: the Xiaomi Mi Pro Power Bank and the Mophie Powerstation Plus XL.

The question however is: which one is right for you? Based on our experience and prior knowledge of both these power banks, we aim to show you which one is the best for you in this post.

Xiaomi Mi Pro Power Bank

Xiaomi Mi Pro Power BankThe Xiaomi Power Bank is the first portable charger that I purchased for my travels and it’s one that I’ve used and loved for numerous years.

The ultra-lightweight design is one of my favourite features as it means it easily fits into my backpack and most jacket pockets; meaning that I can charge my phone on the go!

I also love the smooth, matte finish to the aluminium casing. While the style of the power bank plays no significance in its charging abilities, it is nice to carry around a sleek and simple device!

It’s also 42% thinner than its predecessor (the Xiaomi 10000mAH) but with even more power, meaning that it charges my devices much quicker! I can get four full charges of my iPhone with the Xiaomi Power Bank which will last me at least four days (I usually charge my phone once a day, at night).

Another incredible feature of the Xiaomi Mi Pro Power Bank that I’ve found to be remarkably practical when travelling to various parts of the world is that it’s heat sensitive and has a special temperature control system in place. This means that regardless of whether I’m in the middle of the desert or on top of an Alpine mountain range, the Power Bank still works efficiently.

  • Type-C charging
  • High-density batteries
  • 18W fast charging with a two-way system
  • 10,000mAh battery capacity
  • Charges an iPhone 6 four times

  • Power bank charges in 3.5 hours compared to a standard power bank which takes 6 hours
  • Super thin design (12.58mm)
  • Value for money compared to the dearer Mophie power bank. You can see the price here

  • Less battery capacity than the Mophie power bank

Mophie Powerstation Plus XL

While the Xiaomi Power Bank was my first real power bank purchase (and one that I’ve loved for many years), I decided to give the Mophie Powerstation Plus XL a shot. I wanted to see if there was any difference between the two and if you pay for what you get when it comes to portable chargers.Mophie Powerstation Plus XL

At more than twice the price of the Xiaomi Mi Pro, the Mophie Powerstation Plus is remarkably expensive for a power bank. You can check the price here.

In order to justify the price of the Powerstation Plus, I’m pleased to report that it comes equipped with excellent features and charging abilities.

For folks who have multiple Apple products (like the iPhone and an Apple Mac laptop), you will love that this power bank comes with an Apple lightning connector so that you can easily charge your devices without any issue.

I also love the fact that you can charge two devices at once, as well as charging the Powerstation at the same time! This is a great feature for me when I need to charge both my phone and my laptop after a long day of browsing, exploring and taking pictures!

The Mophie Powerstation also has a 12,000mAH battery capacity compared to Xiaomi’s 10,000mAH capacity; this means it gives me more than four additional charges for my iPhone without running out of power. While the Xiaomi power bank does charge phones four times, it only does so with older generations of iPhone (6 and below) whereas the Mophie power bank can charge my iPhone X four times.

Furthermore, when I used to own the Samsung Galaxy S7, I could also enjoy four charges for my phone with the Mophie Powerstation Plus XL as the micro USB connector was perfect for charging my phone with!

What’s more, I appreciate the fact that Mophie is one of the industry’s leading brands when it comes to power banks and their two-year warranty fills me with confidence and knowledge that if something happens to my Powerstation, Mophie will be able to either fix it or replace it. While a broken power bank isn’t ideal when I’m travelling with nowhere to charge my devices, I know that I have the guarantee they’ll be able to fix it in the event that it breaks.

  • Apple lightning connector
  • Recharges wirelessly with a Mophie wireless charging pad
  • You can charge the Powerstation while charging your devices

  • Provides 34+ hours of power for iPhone
  • Charges two devices at once
  • 2-year warranty guarantee
  • 12,000mAh battery capacity compared to Xiaomi’s 10,000mAH

Which one is best?

When it comes to answering the question of which one is best with regards to the Xiaomi Mi Pro Power Bank vs the Mophie Powerstation Plus XL, it really is dependent on personal preference and exactly what you’re looking for with a power bank.

For me, I always sway more to the Xiaomi Pro Power Bank as it’s compact, very affordable (especially compared to its competitors) and has a unique temperature control system so that it never overheats or freezes, regardless of the climate or terrain that I’m in.

The Mophie Powerstation is also an excellent candidate but its premium price tag is quite off-putting, especially if you’re travelling on a budget and are looking for an affordable power bank. I highly recommend both of these power banks, but the Xiaomi Pro Power Bank has my vote almost every time!

  1. Dear Femi,

The power bank I am using at the moment is not working properly, and I want to buy a new one so while doing some research online I came across your helpful post.

Sharing your own experience about Xiaomi Power Bank adds more value to it. The features, pro’s and price of Xiaomi Mi Power Bank sounds interesting. Mophie Powerstation Plus XL is quite expensive nearly double the price of Xiaomi Mi Power Bank.

I am using Xiaomi MI3 mobile (Yes it’s been a while since I purchased it, nearly 5 years old) and I happy with it. So I prefer to purchase Xiaomi Mi Power Bank. Thanks a lot for helping in my decision-making and saving my time.

    Much Success!

  2. Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for your review of both the The Xiaomi Power Bank and Mophie Powerstation Plus XL. My wife is a cabin manager for a major airline and travels a lot. Quite often she finds her mobile runs low or even flat because she has forgotten to pack the correct charger or has hired a vehicle and been travelling for the day.

I have encouraged her to get herself a powerbank and always make sure it is something she packs with her hand luggage that way she always has a backup. Unfortunately I have looked at so many reviews and we still haven’t decided which is the best option for her. However based on your recommendation I think the Xiaomi Power Bank will be perfect for her needs.

She wants something that is fairly light and to be honest it will likely only have to do one or at most two complete charges of an I-Phone X so it has all the capacity she needs. I think spending any more than this for additional charge capacity really isn’t worth her while. (the good thing is she likes the way it looks to!) Thanks again for a very helpful review

    • Hi Kevin,

I’m very grateful to read of your wife’s experience. It can be quite disconcerting when you have a dead mobile without a means of getting it back to life; power banks are a must have these days and you can’t go wrong with the Xiaomi Mi Pro.

I’m pleased you found the review insightful.

      Best regards

  3. Personally I have had very good experiences with xiaomi’s mi band and the company left a good expression with me. They are the type which actually deliver what they promise without disappointments, for affordable prices. I can really relate with how you feel about their power bank. As you said, with the temperature system you will certainly not have to worry about exploding batteries, so that’s another plus.

  4. Thank you for such an in-depth article!

I’m not at all happy with these two power banks.  I have one of another brand and am not at all happy with it but wasn’t sure where to go from here.  You explained very well both the pros and cons of both of these products so that I can make an informed decision.  I appreciate the listing of the pros and cons of both – very useful!

I live in a rural area that often experiences power outages.  I depend on my bank for these occasions and so will definitely be looking into these.

    Keep up the great work!

    • Hello,

      Thank you for your message.

But I’m afraid, I’m confused with what you mean. Are you saying you are not happy with these two power banks that I have written about: Xiaomi Mi Pro & Mophie Powerstation Plus? Or do you mean to say you have two other brands that you are not happy with?

  5. Wow wow wow. Very good post. I’m ready to go and purchase a Xiaomi Mi Pro right now. I have a SanDisk (sp), that is used primarily for transferring data from iPad to hard drive. It’s supposed to be multi purpose and serve as a power bank as well, but it hasn’t worked for me. Something like this with a dedicated use, seems like the way to go. As far as long-term tenure, would you recommend the mophie? Does it seem more durable, or will the Mi Pro work ok?

    • Hi Eddie,

      I like your enthusiasm lol

I think both of them are durable – these companies value their reputations and as such push out quality products. But others may argue that the Mophie Powerstation is more durable than the Xiaomi Mi Pro because of the 2-year warranty that Mophie offers compared to the 12 months that Xiaomi provides.

That said, my experience is that these banks tend to last quite long in general. So if the Xiaomi Mi Pro appeals to you the most – I’d say go for it:)

Hope that’s useful but let me know if you have any further questions.
