Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020

Best power banks in 2020
My top picks of the best power banks in 2020

Have you been looking for a power bank to buy but you can’t quite decide which one to opt for?

I can appreciate your dilemma.

There are just so many reputable brands to choose from!

Today you have power banks from leading manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, Anker, and Zagg. You’ve got other options from reputable companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, Intex, and GP Battteries. And as if that’s not enough, you are spoilt with further offerings from Lenovo, Xtorm and iMuto.

What’s more, various power banks appear to have the same features but are selling for a range of different prices. And then there is the tech jargon to contend with.

Well not to worry because in this post, I have produced a guide on what I consider to be the Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020. I have spent a lot of time researching these power banks so you can get much-needed clarity in deciding which power bank is best for you.

What Makes For A Top Performing Power Bank Anyhow?

In my view, the best power banks in 2020 need to perform well in the following areas:

Best Power bank factors
  • capacity - so you can charge your mobile phone multiples times before you have to re-charge the power bank itself;
  • portability - no one wants a bulky power bank that is heavy to carry around;
  • charging speed - you need to be able to charge your mobile phone as well as the power bank itself quickly;
  • number of ports - it is always convenient when you can charge multiples devices simultaneously; and
  • price - you want something that delivers features/value that’s commensurate with what you are paying.

In keeping with these themes, I’ve split this guide on the best power banks in 2020 into different sections. You can find the best overall, the best portable, the best for multiple devices, best high end and so on…

But To Save You Some Time

Best Repellent

From my perspective, the best power bank you can buy in 2020 is the Mophie Powerstation XXL (fabric).

Mophie has been in the business of making power banks for a while now, and for what I have seen, they do a brilliant job. I have chosen the Mophie PowerStation XXL as the best overall power bank as it does not seem to compromise on any features and still retails for a reasonable price.

      • Its 20,000mAh capacity means that you can use the power bank for an extended period between charges.

      • Given how compact it is, you will be able to carry it around relatively easily.

      • It can charge multiple devices simultaenously.

      • The USB-C port it comes with mean you can re-charge the power bank really quickly.

And that's not all! You can see/read more about it below in the main review.

Having said that

You will see from this guide that there are a number of other decent power banks for you to choose from. My hope is that the post gives you plenty of information and inspiration to decide which power bank is best for you in 2020. And if you have any questions about these power banks or you want to leave your own personal review, you are welcome to leave a comment below.

I’d also like you to know that this article is not sponsored in any way by any company. This selection has been independently compiled by myself and my team. And the only thing I receive is a small commission from the Amazon affiliate program if you buy any of them through the links and price buttons on this page. It doesn’t cost you a penny. But it really helps me out as this money goes to paying for maintaining the website, editing software, my time and everything else that goes into preparing this post.

Okay, let’s get on with my list of the best power banks in 2020 as I know you’re all excited to see which ones I’d recommend the most!

1. Mophie Powerstation XXL (fabric) – best overall

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Mophie Powerstation XXL (fabric)

The Mophie Powerstation XXL power bank is my personal recommendation of the best power banks in 2020 for numerous reasons.

I’ve actually written about the Mophie Powerstation XXL’s predecessor before (you can check out the review of the Mophie Powerstation XL here). But I’m pleased to tell you that the newer model is much better in almost every way!

Firstly, I love the look of its sleek and smooth design. Many power banks are pretty chunky and made from unattractive plastics, whereas the Mophie Powerstation XXL power bank looks and feels much more professional. What’s more, it has a fabric body, which feels great to hold.

It also comes equipped with three different ports; two standard USB ports and one USB-C port. This would be particularly useful if I was travelling with a friend who has a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus (so he needs to use the USB-C port) and I could use the standard USB port for my phone.

This 20,000mAh battery capacity actually provides approximately 73 hours of power so you can rest assured that it will last days without having to be recharged.

Furthermore, this power bank can be charged from empty to full in around 5 hours, which I think is a pretty standard charging time for most portable chargers.

It’s important to look out for power banks that can be charged quickly themselves as you don’t want to have to wait around for hours while your power bank charges, in order to then charge your various electronic devices!

One slight downside to the Mophie Powerstation XXL is that it’s a little on the heavy side. While it’s not quite as weighty as the MAXOAK 50,000mAh power bank for example, it’s certainly not as lightweight as the RAVPower Luster portable charger.

The Mophie Powerstation XXL also has a battery capacity of 20,000mAh. Simply put, mAh
is used to measure the energy capacity of a battery, so the higher the mAh, the better the battery capacity and the longer the battery will last.

This 20,000mAh battery capacity actually provides approximately 73 hours of power so you can rest assured that it will last days without having to be recharged.

It also comes fitted with four LED lights that indicate the charging status and the current battery life. However, I’ve read numerous reviews that you really have to be up close and personal to the power bank in order to be able to see these lights clearly.

In the grand scheme of things however, this is just a minor inconvenience and certainly not one that would put me off purchasing!

Pros:

  • Sleek and smooth design
  • Good amount of ports
  • Relatively affordable

Cons:

  • Relatively heavy

Key specs:

  • Weight: 550g
  • Size: 16cm x 7.62cm x 2.2cm
  • Battery capacity: 20,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 3

2. RAVPower Luster portable charger – best budget

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: RAVPower Luster portable charger

I’ve chosen the RAVPower Luster portable charger as the best budget option in this list of the best power banks in 2020 simply because it’s so affordable.

However, that’s not where the positives of this power bank end!

The RAVPower Luster is also incredibly lightweight – it’s actually the lightest power bank on this list – and it boasts a very smart and compact design.

This power bank is perfect for carrying around in your bag, or even just in your pocket, on a daily basis as it’s so small and lightweight.

I also love the fact that the RAVPower Luster is so affordable. Oftentimes, you can spend an absolute fortune on power banks, only for them to let you down and perform badly after a month or two!

Unfortunately, the budget aspect of the RAVPower Luster also means that its battery capacity isn’t quite as up to scratch as most other portable chargers on this list.

The RAVPower Luster power bank can charge an iPhone 6 twice before it completely runs out of juice.

With a battery capacity of just 6,700mAh, the RAVPower Luster power bank can charge an iPhone 6 twice before it completely runs out of juice. As there’s now an iPhone 11 Pro
model, this doesn’t seem too promising to be able to charge a higher output phone.

However, it does charge two times faster than a 2A output charger thanks to its 2.4A output which means that you’ll be able to get back to posting on Instagram with a full phone battery in no time!

Another slight downside to the RAVPower Luster portable charger is that it only has one port. This means that only one electronic device can be charged at any one time, so you wouldn’t be able to charge your iPhone and tablet at the same time, for example.

This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing however, as if you’re only charging one thing at a time, it’s much more likely to charge quicker than if it had to supply power to two devices!

Overall, the RAVPower Luster power bank isn’t going to overwhelm you with its battery capacity or ability to charge multiple things at once. However, I still think it’s an excellent budget friendly power bank that’s incredibly lightweight, compact and best of all, affordable!

Pros:

  • Small, compact design
  • Very lightweight
  • Incredibly affordable

Cons:

  • Not a very high battery capacity

Key specs:

  • Weight: 141g
  • Size: 8.9 x 4.2 x 2.2cm
  • Battery capacity: 6,700mAh
  • Number of ports: 1

3. Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank Pro – best portable

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank Pro

Xiaomi are one of the leading providers in the power bank industry so it’s no surprise that I’ve included the Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank as the best portable power bank in 2020.

The Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank can charge an Android device in less than two hours (1 hour and 50 minutes to be precise!) which I think is pretty good considering how much battery power our phones use nowadays.

It can also fully charge an iPhone 6 up to four times from one battery on the power bank which is very respectable and something that impresses me as someone who regularly drains their phone battery right down to zero!

However, the main reason why I chose the Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank to be featured on this guide is due to its portability.

The Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank is very thin and pretty lightweight so you shouldn’t have any issues with it weighing you down too much when carrying it out and about.

Furthermore, I also really like the look of its smooth and sleek design; it doesn’t look too bulky or “industrial”. Of course, investing in the latest and greatest travel accessories
isn’t all about looks and how photogenic they are, but I definitely think it’s nice to have a power bank that doesn’t look like you’re carrying a brick around!

One thing that I’ve mentioned many times on my previous travel accessories reviews and guides is that I like a product to be convenient and well suited to me and I definitely think that the Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank fits that bill.

Whether I’m purchasing a new point and shoot camera, or I’m looking to invest in a new pair of the best wireless earbuds, I want to ensure that each product is exactly what I’m looking for and that it caters to my needs.

I think the Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank is well suited to many different people (including myself), such as business professionals who constantly need to keep the battery charged on their phone, to bloggers who can’t let their phone battery die in case they need to update their Instagram feed!

The Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank comes equipped with a USB data cable and a Type-C adapter which means you can charge the latest models of the iPhone without worrying about not having the correct charging cable.

The only slight downside to this is that the charging cables are a little short so you might find it a bit inconvenient to play on your phone while it’s charging. Overall, I think the Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank is an excellent portable charger and one that allows you to charge your phone numerous times.

Pros:

  • Very thin
  • Easy to carry around
  • 2 ports for your convenience

Cons:

  • Charging cables are a little short

Key specs:

  • Weight: 223g
  • Size: 12.9cm x 7.5cm x 1.26cm
  • Battery capacity: 10,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 2

4. Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank – best lightweight

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank

While the RAVPower Luster power bank might weigh 20g less than the Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank, I’ve still chosen it as the best lightweight power bank in 2020.

This is because not only is the Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank very lightweight, it’s also incredibly sleek and compact, making it the perfect portable charger to carry around in your pocket.

It’s roughly the size of a pack of cards, so depending on how big or small your pockets are, you shouldn’t face any issues!

The Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank also has a pretty decent battery capacity of 10,000mAh.

Unfortunately, the one major downside to the Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank is that it only has one port so you can only charge one electronic device at a time.

This is only a slightly minor inconvenience however, as I’m very impressed that it can charge an iPhone three times before it runs out of battery.

The portable charger itself also recharges in less than four hours, so you don’t have to worry about waiting too long before you can hit the road with it in your pocket or backpack!

I also think the Anker PowerCore II 10,000mAh power bank is one of the easiest and nicest power banks to use. The simple on and off button allows you to start charging your devices with just one swift click.

I think this portable charger is an excellent choice for you if you want something lightweight and not really heavy duty. It’s not the most durable power bank on this list, but it will serve you well for charging your phone while you’re out and about.

Pros:

  • Very lightweight
  • Decent battery capacity
  • Compact design

Cons:

  • Only has one port

Key specs:

  • Weight: 181g
  • Size: 9.2cm x 6cm x 2.2cm
  • Battery capacity: 10,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 1

5. Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank – best high end

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank

The Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank is the best high end power bank in 2020 for numerous reasons.

Firstly, its incredibly cool and unique shape and design makes it really stand out from its competitors.

It’s shaped somewhat like a square but it has numerous little edges and ridges around it, giving it a truly one-of-a-kind look.

However, the best thing about the Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank for me, is that you’re able to charge everything from your phone and tablet, to your camera and laptop.

This makes it a great power bank for digital nomads or those who spend much of their working life on the road and staying in various hotels all around the world. You can easily charge all your electronic devices with no issues at all.

Of course, the major downside to the Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank is its hefty price tag. It’s definitely one of the most expensive power banks on this list, but I always believe that you pay for what you get and in this case, quality really does mean cost.

The Omni 20 allows you to wirelessly charge your phone, simply by placing your phone on top of the charging device.

This portable charger also goes one step further in the power bank world and allows you to wirelessly charge your phone, simply by placing your phone on top of the charging device. This is such a useful feature for those who regularly leave the house without their phone charging cable in tow!

Furthermore, the Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank can also act as a USB hub whereby you can turn one USB-C port into three USB outlets, simply by hooking your laptop into the hub port. It also allows you to sync and manage your files across numerous devices. I think this feature is particularly useful for business people and those who often work in co-working spaces.

If you can justify the cost of the Omni 20 USB-C Portable Power Bank, then I’d definitely say that it’s a power bank worth investing in.

Pros:

  • Cool and unusual design
  • Compatible with laptops, phones, cameras and tablets
  • Four different ports

Cons:

  • Pretty expensive

Key specs:

  • Weight: 499g
  • Size: 13cm x 13cm x 3cm
  • Battery capacity: 20,100mAh
  • Number of ports: 4

6. RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger – best for laptops

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Xiaomi 10,000mAh Power Bank Pro

The RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger is featured on this list of the best power banks in 2020 as I believe that it’s the best option out there specifically for laptops.

As it’s compatible with most laptops, the RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger makes it easy for those busy workers who are constantly on the go to charge their laptops while travelling.

I also think this would have made an excellent travel companion when I was on a road trip where I still needed to use my laptop occasionally!

It’s quite heavy and it’s got a pretty chunky design but that just accommodates all the necessary battery capacity and output so it can charge laptops without any hiccups.

With a battery capacity of 20,100mAh, the RAVPower Universal is one of the best power banks on this list in terms of battery life and capacity.

The fact that it’s compatible with most laptops, including MacBooks, means that you should be able to plug your laptop straight in and get charging without any issues.

The RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger also accommodates phone charging at the same time, so if all your electronics are running low on battery, you can easily charge them all in one go.

It does only have two ports however, so you won’t be able to charge many things at once. However, the RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger’s main selling point is its ability to charge laptops so I don’t really think that’s too much of an issue.

If you’re someone who travels a lot for work and struggles to find plug sockets on public transport, or you just want a convenient way of charging your laptop, then the RAVPower Universal Power Bank Travel Charger is a great portable charger for you!

Pros:

  • Compatible with most laptops
  • High battery capacity
  • Great for people on the go

Cons:

  • A little heavy

Key specs:

  • Weight: 585g
  • Size: 14.5cm x 6.5cm x 6.5cm
  • Battery capacity: 20,100mAh
  • Number of ports: 2

7. Omars Power Bank 10,000mAh – best USB-C

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Omars Power Bank 10,000mAh

One thing that I’ve noticed when carrying out research on the best power banks in 2020 is that not all of them come equipped with the means to charge USB-C devices.

Phone such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and various models of the Google Pixel all have USB-C charging slots, which need to be accommodated for when it comes to pairing them with a portable charger.

Thankfully, the Omars Power Bank 10,000mAh provides the industry with the best USB-C portable charger in 2020.

The only issue I’ve read with this is that even though the USB-C slots are very much appreciated, they don’t quite provide the same USB-C charging speeds as you’d expect.

This is because the connector is only snapped onto a microUSB cable, rather than having the charge go directly from the power bank to the device.

However, I think most people will agree that it’s just nice to be able to charge a USB-C device without too many problems.

It also comes equipped with four different charging ports so you can charge multiple devices at any one time.

I think this is a great feature to have, especially if you’re travelling with friends and you all need to charge your phones at the same time!

Furthermore, the Omars Power Bank 10,000mAh is pretty lightweight and very thin so it can easily be transported around without you worrying that it’s going to weigh you down. A lightweight portable charger is something that’s very important to look out for, but you also need to remember to weigh up the pros of it being very lightweight versus not having a great battery capacity.

Luckily, you don’t really need to worry about that with the Omars Power Bank because it has a battery capacity of 10,000mAh which is pretty standard in the power bank world. It might not be the 50,000mAh output that the MAXOAK power bank offers, but it still allows you to charge your devices quickly and efficiently.

Pros:

  • Pretty lightweight
  • Four different ports
  • Great for USB-C devices

Cons:

  • You don’t get USB-C charging speeds

Key specs:

  • Weight: 207g
  • Size: 14.5cm x 6.85cm x 1.35cm
  • Battery capacity: 10,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 4

8. MAXOAK 50,000mAh – best for numerous devices

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: MAXOAK 50,000mAh

If you’re looking for a power bank that’s suitable for use with many devices, then look no further than the MAXOAK 50,000mAh.

This incredible power bank comes equipped with a mightily impressive six ports, and it’s also compatible with many different phones, tablets, iPads and even some laptops!

The one major electronic device that it’s not compatible with is a MacBook, but then again, not many power banks or portable chargers are able to charge something of that capacity!

The best feature of the MAXOAK 50,000mAh power bank in my eyes is that it has 50,000mAh battery capacity.

This is by far the most impressive out of any other power bank featured on this list and it may very well be one of the best battery capacities of a portable charger ever, not just in 2020!

The six different ports on the MAXOAK 50,000mAh include two 1A USB ports, two 2.1A USB ports, one 12v port and one 20v port that can be used to charge laptops.

In order to fit all of these ports and battery capacity into one device however, it means that the MAXOAK 50,000mAh power bank is pretty chunky and remarkably heavy, especially compared to every other power bank featured on this list.

Also, as the power bank is so big and requires a lot of battery capacity, the device itself takes around seven hours to charge. Of course, this isn’t exactly ideal if you forget to charge it the night before and you want to take it with you to work, but if you remember to charge it overnight, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Considering just how incredible the MAXOAK 50,000mAh is, I was surprised to discover that it’s not quite as astronomically priced as I was expecting. Of course, it’s still on the expensive side of things and is undoubtedly one of the most expensive portable chargers on this list, but considering what you get with this product, I think it’s definitely an investment well worth making.

I’d highly recommend the MAXOAK 50,000mAh power bank to anyone who’s looking for a flash device that allows them to charge many things on the go, all at once.

Pros:

  • Incredible battery capacity
  • Many ports
  • Compatible with many devices

Cons:

  • Very heavy and chunky design

Key specs:

  • Weight: 1.26kg
  • Size: 20.6cm x 13.5cm x 3.3cm
  • Battery capacity: 50,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 6

9. Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh – best sleek design

Price

Top 9 Best Power Banks in 2020: Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh

I mentioned above that it’s not all about looks and design when it comes to investing in travel accessories and technology, but it certainly is a bonus when you find a product that ticks the majority of the right boxes.

The Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh power bank is a beautifully designed portable charger that not only looks great, but it provides the output too.

With a battery capacity of 10,000mAh, it’s not exactly revolutionary, but it will charge your phone and tablets well.

It’s fitted with three ports so you can charge multiple devices at one time and it’s also a pretty affordable option.

It can sometimes be a bit tricky to find a charging device that performs well and doesn’t come with an extortionate price tag, but I firmly believe that the Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh power bank fits the bill.

I think my favourite part of the Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh power bank is its smooth finish and slim design. This makes it much easier to carry around with you, without being weighed down too much.

Unfortunately, the sleek design of this power bank also means that it’s not quite as durable as some other models and you may find that it can break or scratch easily. In order to combat that, you simply just need to take care when using it, make sure you don’t drop it and don’t just leave it poking out of the top of your bag!

I think that the Poweradd Pilot 2GS 10,000mAh power bank is a great portable charger to invest in if you’re looking for something relatively affordable, with a sleek finish and a decent battery capacity.

Pros:

  • Decent number of ports
  • Affordable
  • Smooth and sleek design

Cons:

  • Not quite as durable as some other models

Key specs:

  • Weight: 249g
  • Size: 13.8cm x 7.39cm x 1.37cm
  • Battery capacity: 10,000mAh
  • Number of ports: 3

  1. Hi Femi,
This is a great review article! I have tried on three separate occasions to buy a power bank but the shear number of products can be overwhelming. I think I will take another look , now that you’ve organized thinks for me so nicely!

  3. Hey,

Great post. I need a powerbank for all the places I go with my laptop. Working in coffee shops without any plugs is always a pain, so having a fully charged, lightweight, affordable powerbank would be great.

I will have a good look into your recommendations and I will let you know what one I decide to buy. I have also forwarded this post on to my friends who would also benefit from a powerbank.

    Thanks for sharing.

    All the best,

    Tom

  5. The one thing I notice is that Power Packs are now becoming separated into two groups. High power and Low power for just charging the phone providing portability.
One can’t expect to find a power monster to charge their laptop and still put it in their pocket, at least not yet anyway. And the price will reflect the higher battery cost inside.
The other question is putting them to the test to see which ones perform according to the manufacture specs. You gave me some options to look at for sure.
    Great review.

Thank you for your contribution to the topic. If I have more time I will append the post to explore your points around high power vs low power packs.

  7. I’ve been thinking about purchasing a power bank as my phone is always low on juice. Yes, I forget to charge it frequently.
With your review, I now can decide which one best suits my needs.
I like the Xiamo portable charger for the job of charging my smartphone.

  9. Hi Femi,
As a travel blogger, a power bank is part and parcel of my travels and over the years that I have travelled, I have used only Anker.
I actually have about 5 different ones and they have served me. I didn’t know about the varieties out there. This post has definitely enlighten me and I hope to use your recommendations. Thank you.

    • Yes Bolupe,

Anker are a decent brand for sure and you will have noticed I have one on my shortlist too. The important thing is to find something that’s decent/reliable, that will give you that extra power you when you need it, and Anker does that well.

      Thanks for your comment.
