Best carry-on luggage for tall people

If you’re reading this, you probably know the pain of searching high and low (pun intended) for clothes that actually fit. And let’s be real, it’s not just pants and shirts that are either too long or shrink in the wash, finding the best carry-on luggage for tall people can be a daunting task as well.

Luckily, I’m here to help with the latter.

After conducting thorough internet research (they are surprisingly rare), I have compiled the top 14 carry-on luggage for tall folks.

The good thing is that these bags are specially designed to offer comfort and convenience for those of us who are blessed with height so that you can travel without difficulty and without feeling like the Hunchback of Notre Dame while carrying your luggage.

What is the best carry-on luggage for tall people?

In my opinion, the best carry-on luggage for tall travelers are the TravelPro Maxlite Air Carry-On for those who prefer a suitcase, the Osprey Porter 46 for backpackers, and the North Face Base Camp Duffel for travelers in favor of a duffel bag. Each option is specifically designed to be comfortable and convenient for tall people, from the height adjustable handles to the customizable harness system and ergonomic features, so you can travel with ease.

In this section, we’ll be focusing on suitcases (both softside and hardside) that are designed with adjustable handles so people of varying heights can customize them to fit.

Briggs & Riley Essential 22″ Carry-on

Credit: briggs-riley.com

Summary: A luxurious bag for tall travelers who values both styles and functionality in a carry-on.

This softsided carry-on from Briggs & Riley is my top recommendation for the best carry-on luggage for tall people because of its aircraft-grade telescoping handle that comes with a multiple-stop height design.

On the chance that the luggage is too low for you to draw comfortably, you can just raise or lower the handle to your preferred height!

I also like how the handle locks in place so you won’t have to worry about it collapsing when you try to move your suitcase through a crowded airport.

And because there’s no denying that being (and feeling) organized makes for a much more enjoyable trip, I’m happy to tell you that this bag comes with a built-in tri-fold garment folder so you can travel with your suits and dresses without worrying about them getting wrinkled.

This is in addition to the various pockets as well as a main compartment that can be expanded by 34%!

How cool is that?

What we also love

Many of the features that I look for in a reliable carry-on are present in this bag, including self-healing YKK zippers, a durable ballistic nylon construction, four silent-rolling spinner wheels, a hideaway ID tag, a TSA lock, and a power bank pocket for charging while you’re out and about because running out of battery can be such a real pain.

And you can trot to the airport with confidence, knowing its measures 22 x 14 x 9 inches, making it carry-on sized for short trips and airline travel.

What’s not great

The Briggs & Riley Essential carry-on case sure has the appeal of a luxurious bag, which isn’t bad. Except it costs just as much. It is, in fact, one of the most expensive carry-on luggage for tall individuals on this list, for that matter.

And it weighs a whopping 10 lbs (4.6 kg), making it heavy for a carry-on, so if you want a lightweight suitcase you can handle easily, I’d suggest you look elsewhere.

TravelPro Maxlite Air Compact Carry-On

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: TravelPro Maxlite Air Compact Carry-On

Summary: The Maxlite Air is expandable, lightweight, and durable.

The Maxlite Air makes my list of best carry-on luggage for tall persons because of its sturdy PowerScope Lite handle that locks in two positions (38” and 42.5”) to accommodate users of different heights.

It also glides effortlessly thanks to its 8 smooth-gliding spinner wheels that rotate 360 degrees for easy maneuverability.

Another good thing about the Maxlite Air is that it’s very lightweight.

It’s made of 100% polycarbonate, which is a lightweight but impact-absorbing material.

This makes it easy to carry without adding a lot of weight to your luggage, and if you do happen to hit a bump or two along the way, it’s nice that the case will be able to take it without sustaining much damage.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: TravelPro Maxlite Air Compact Carry-On

What we also love

The interior lining of the suitcase is made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles—so you can feel good about your purchase knowing that it’s eco-friendly.

What’s more?

The 40L main compartment of the bag expands 2 inches, so you can pack more when you need to. Plus, at just 6.1 pounds, this 20″ Maxlite Air is a lightweight carry-on — a definite bonus when you’re trying to avoid those pesky overweight baggage fees.

Best of all, it is sized to fit in the overhead bin space of major airlines.

What’s not great

From my research, the TravelPro Maxlite Air carry-on has been known to have zipper problems. So if you’re considering this bag, make sure to test out the zippers before making your purchase to make sure they work properly.

But other than that, this is one of the best carry-on luggage for tall people that is lightweight, and durable.

Traveler’s Choice Tasmania Suitcase

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Traveler’s Choice Tasmania Suitcase

Summary: An affordable and feature-packed suitcase for taller travelers.

On a budget? Traveler’s Choice Tasmania is an economical option that doesn’t skimp on features.

First and foremost, this luggage is the perfect size for a carry-on at 22 inches high, 14.5 inches wide, and 9 inches deep.

But what really distinguishes it as one of the best carry-on bags for tall people is the aluminum push-button telescoping handle, which can extend to a height of 42 inches. Your back and neck will thank you because you won’t have to stoop while carrying your luggage through the airport or down the street. Phew!

Let’s now talk about the suitcase’s surprisingly spacious and well-organized interior.

The interior is entirely lined and features two packing sections, two mesh zipped pockets, tie-down straps, and a 25% expandable capacity for times when you need additional space.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Traveler’s Choice Tasmania Suitcase

What we also love

Because of its 100% high-quality polycarbonate construction, this bag’s exterior can absorb impact by “flexing” when put under stress, so you won’t have to worry about it falling apart after only a few trips.

Also, the Tasmania carry-on costs less than $100 and includes TSA locks, 360-degree rotating wheels, and a quick add-a-bag strap for towing additional bags.

What’s not great

I’ve come across a few complaints about this luggage’s quality on Amazon and other review websites.

For instance, expertworldtravel.com warns that the corners don’t seem to be sufficiently reinforced, which could lead to them breaking easily.

Furthermore, when handling it, you must be careful to avoid scratching the polycarbonate exterior cause it shows scratches easily.

Nonetheless, the Tasmania Suitcase is a great buy if you’re on a budget because of its adjustable telescoping handle, expandable capacity, and affordable price tag.

Travelpro Platinum Elite 21” Carry-on

Credit: travelpro.com

Summary: perfect for those who want durability and style.

Another highly rated carry-on that is made to be more comfortable for tall individuals is the Travelpro Platinum Elite. It has a handle system that can be adjusted to four different heights- 36″, 38″, 40,” and 42. 5″.

The design of this tall luggage also includes a PowerScope extension handle that minimizes wobble when completely extended and a comfortable “Contour Grip” to fit your hand properly.

What’s more?

Frequent travelers will appreciate the advantages this suitcase has to offer.

It is made of high-density nylon fabric with a DuraGuard coating that resists stains and abrasions, as well as smooth-rolling, self-aligning wheels that rotate 360 degrees.

Also, this 48L bag expands up to 2 inches for extra room and has a detachable TSA-compliant quart-size wet pocket that is perfect for storing toiletries.

What we also love

If you frequently travel for work, you’ll appreciate this bag’s drop-in, fold-out suiter, which will prevent wrinkles from forming on your clothes while in transportation.

Also, it is covered by Travelpro’s lifetime warranty!

What’s not great

The TravelPro Platinum Elite 21” suitcase is a bit pricey and does not come with a TSA lock, so you may need to purchase one separately.

With a dimension of 23.5″ x 14.5″ x 9,” the Platinum Elite is also a little bigger than the allowed carry-on size. It’s even written on the TravelPro website that when fully expanded, the carry-on may not meet airline restrictions.

So, before you travel with this bag, my advice is that you verify with your airline to be on the safe side.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Samsonite Solyte DLX Softside Carry-On 20-Inch
Credit: shop.samsonite.com

Summary: a bag that offers sturdy construction with thoughtful features

The Samsonite Solyte DLX is the best carry-on luggage for tall travelers who are looking for a durable suitcase with a little extra room.

One of the best things about this carry-on is that it comes with a telescopic handle that locks into multiple height positions, allowing you to adjust it to fit your height perfectly.

No more stooping over or hunching your shoulders to reach the handle!

It also has a contoured pull handle for an easy grip, and four spinner wheels that allow for 360-degree upright rolling—so there’s no need to worry about the weight on your arm or shoulder.

And if you’re worried about space, don’t be.

This carry-on has plenty of room for everything you need, thanks to its expandable design. Plus, it comes with a built-in organization including a zippered mesh pocket, and a WetPak pocket, which is great for carry-on liquids and toiletries.

One of my favorite features is the Smart Fix Buckles.

These keep tie-down straps out of the way when packing, so you can easily pack and unpack without having to fumble with tangled straps. There are also spacious front exterior pockets where you can keep anything you might need during the flight.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Samsonite Solyte DLX Softside Carry-On 20-Inch
Credit: shop.samsonite.com

What we also love

The Solyte DLX has some thoughtful features.

It comes with a USB port for charging devices, a privacy ID tag, and a 100% rugged polyester weave that ensures your suitcase won’t break down after two trips. Best of all, it meets most carry-on size restrictions at 22.0″ x 14.0″ x 9.5″.

And it comes with a 10-year limited warranty!

Not to mention, the Solyte DLX is one of Samsonite’s and Amazon‘s bestselling luggage, so you know you’re in good hands.

What’s not great

The Samsonite Solyte DLX Softside 20-Inch  Carry-On is a great carry-on bag, but it does have a few drawbacks.

First, it does not come with a TSA lock, so you’ll need to buy one separately if you’re going to use this bag for air travel. Second, there is no compartment specifically designed for laptops, so it’s not as padded nor safe for transporting your devices.

Other than those two minor issues, this is one of the best carry-on luggage for tall people that is well-made and can last you for many years.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people (backpacks)

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Peak Design Travel Backpack 45

With backpacks, there is no such thing as one size fits all.

You undoubtedly already know how challenging it may be to locate a backpack that fits your frame if you’re tall. You know, one that is sufficiently large but not overly hefty for your height.

Surprise, surprise!

All of the backpacks on this list are functional, comfy, and designed with tall people in mind. Thus, whether you’re looking for a new daily backpack or something spacious to take on your next adventure, one of these alternatives is sure to be perfect for you.

Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L

Credit: osprey.com

Summary: a reliable companion for carry-on travels or one-bag-only adventures.

If you’re tall and finding it difficult to find a backpack that fits you comfortably, I wholeheartedly recommend the Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L

You won’t have to worry about the straps being too short or the frame being too narrow to properly support a longer torso.

This is because all of the straps—shoulder, sternum, and even the hip beltare adjustable, allowing you to always modify them as necessary to your fit. Additionally, the compression straps help compress the bag to a smaller size when it isn’t full, making for a more comfortable and compact carry.

Credit: osprey.com

What we also love

Using the Osprey Sojourn Porter, which is designed to meet the carry-on size requirements for most airlines, will save you money on checked baggage fees.

Another thing I like is that the hip belt and shoulder straps can be tucked down to make the bag even easy to carry and prevent it from dangling or becoming entangled in objects.

And to keep your belongings safe and secure, there is a spacious 46L capacity with locking zippers on the main and laptop compartments, as well as several zippered organizational pockets.

What’s not great
Although this bag is technically designed to be a carry-on, there’s a possibility that some airlines might not accept it as such if it’s very large and filled to the brim with items. Its small size measures 19 x 17.72 x 15.35 inches, which is slightly smaller than the standard carry-on size of 22 x 14 x 8 inches. This might cause some issues, especially when it’s fully packed.

I should also mention that when this bag is big and when packed to its maximum capacity, it becomes quite uncomfortable to carry for long periods. Navigating with a fully stuffed bag might also be a bit inconvenient. Just something to keep in mind.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45

Summary: This photography-ready bag is not only versatile but also features all the bells and whistles we need in a travel bag.

One of the best things about the Peak Design Travel Backpack is that its axial strap attachments not only provide all-day comfort but is also adjustable to fit a wide range of body types.

And if you need even more support, the stowable hip belt and sternum strap can be quickly deployed when needed. When you’re done wearing the backpack, simply stow the straps away under the magnetic flaps for worry-free bag-checking.

Because the last thing you want is a bag that digs into your shoulders or rubs your back raw, the Travel Backpack 45 comes with padded shoulder and waist straps!

Plus, the ultralight padded foam provides security and structure around the entire bag without adding extra weight or bulk.

What we also love

I like that this carry-on is designed to be the most versatile travel bag available.

Whether you’re taking a 2-week trip or just a weekend getaway, this 45L bag has got you covered. It’s also perfect for carrying your camera gear, with padded, dedicated laptop and tablet sleeves as well as plenty of pockets for all your other essentials.

Plus, the expansion zips allow you to fit more in the bag or compress your load as needed.

And its international carry-on approved size means you can take it with you on all your adventures, near and far.

What’s not great

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45 is a great backpack for carrying a lot of gear, but it may be too big and heavy for everyday use.

Travelfreak.com noted that it can be a bit bulky on your back and difficult to haul around if you’re not traveling with a lot of weight.

So if you’re looking for something smaller and lighter, you might want to consider the Peak Design Everyday Backpack 20L or 30L. But if you’re looking for a versatile travel backpack that will provide all-day comfort, the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45 is the perfect choice for you.

Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Backpack

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Osprey Farpoint & Fairview 40 Travel Backpack
Credit: osprey.com

Summary: This popular pack offers a comfortable, gender-specific fit.

It’s unfair, to put it mildly, that there are so many amazing travel backpacks out there that would be perfect for someone of average height, but would make us tall people feel awkward and uncomfortable.

Well, I have some great news for you—the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40L travel backpack is just the exception you’ve been looking for!

The first thing is that each pack offers a comfortable, gender-specific fit.

As a result, whether you select the Farpoint (for men) or the Fairview (for women), you can be sure that the backpack will contour to your body shape for a comfortable fit that you’ll appreciate on long journeys. The adjustable hip belt, harness, and torso fit allow you to customize the backpack to correctly fit your torso length even if you are taller than usual!

But wait, there’s more!

The Farpoint/Fairview 40L is not only the best backpack for tall people but it offers plenty of pockets to keep everything you need close to your fingertips, including a lockable main compartment, a fast-access 16″ laptop and tablet pocket, and quick pockets for your passport, water bottle, or sunglasses.

Also, the 40L capacity allows you to travel light without the temptation to carry too much weight.

Plus, you can simply secure any extra equipment you might require using the compression straps and external gear attachment loops.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Osprey Farpoint & Fairview 40 Travel Backpack
Credit: osprey.com

What we also love

As the best carry-on luggage for tall people, it’s not surprising that this backpack is carry-on sized. You can bring it on an airplane without worrying about it being too big or taking up too much space.

What’s more?

Both backpacks are available in two different color options and sizes, so you can always go for what suits you best.

And here’s the cherry on top: you’ll get to love this bag for a long time to come thanks to Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee.

What’s not great

One drawback of the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40L backpack as highlighted by PackHacker and Indietraveler is that the laptop sleeve sits far away from your body which may make you experience some discomfort when walking because the weight is not well distributed.

They also state that when the pack is full, it becomes difficult to fit a wide bottle in the mesh pockets. Additionally, the front compartment is quite limited in terms of space and can’t accommodate larger items when the main compartment is loaded out.

But other than that, the Fairview and Farpoint packs from Osprey are both very well-rated and positively reviewed bags you can trust.

Tom Bihn Synapse 25

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Tom Bihn Synapse 25

Summary: A sturdy bag that will fit like a glove as it’s designed to fit taller frames.

In its description, Tom Bihn claims that this bag is “great for everyday carry, ultralight travel, or a day hike or for those who are on the taller end of the spectrum”, and from what I have seen, it genuinely lives up to that claim.

One of the best things about the Synapse 25 is how customizable it is. The shoulder, chest, and hip straps are all adjustable, so you can tweak them until you get the perfect fit. What’s more, the edgeless, padded, and breathable mesh design of these straps ensures that they won’t bite into your skin or get sweaty while you wear the backpack for an extended amount of time.

And even when you’re carrying a lot of weight, you’ll stay dry and comfortable thanks to the breathable mesh back panel of the Synapse 25. This is particularly important for taller persons who may find that backpacks tend to tin against their backs and cause discomfort.

But it’s not just carrying comfort that makes the Synapse 25 one of the best backpacks for tall people.

This bag is extremely well-made with durable materials that can withstand years of use and abuse. Don’t worry either if something does go wrong with the backpack because Tom Bihn offers a lifetime warranty.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Tom Bihn Synapse 25

What we also love

As seen in the Brain bag, I have almost always been impressed by Tom Bihn’s organizational pockets and features, which is why I frequently recommend it.

In addition to a flexible main compartment that can hold a laptop or tablet and other essentials, there are smaller pockets for pens, notes, phones, etc. Webbing loops and o-rings on the outside of the backpack also provide additional attachment points for accessories like water bottle holders or carabiners.

And because the bag is small enough to meet the standards for most airlines’ personal item policies, you won’t have to pay an additional fee to bring it onboard with you.

What’s not great

The Tom Bihn Synapse 25 has a lot of good things going for it, but it also has some drawbacks.

According to Alice and Jjustchavez, this bag’s appearance is dated and seems to be made for people in their 30s and older. I’d admit that it’s hardly the most stylish bag out there.

It also doesn’t come with a protective laptop sleeve unless you spend extra money on a laptop cache. As such, it can be argued that this backpack is large and expensive, especially because it is missing a padded laptop sleeve.

Despite these drawbacks, the Synapse 25 is still a fantastic bag and comes highly recommended if you’re seeking the best luggage for tall people.

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24
Credit: mysteryranch.com

Summary: The Urban Assault 24 is very comfortable and well-built.

If you’re looking for a smaller backpack that’s still comfortable for tall people to wear, the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24 comes highly recommended.

Considered one of the most comfortable packs, the harness system of the Assault 24 is adjustable, which allows you to find the perfect fit regardless of your height.

Additionally, its narrower, longer frame caters well to taller bodies, and its padded shoulder straps and waist belt make it comfortable to carry even when fully loaded down.

And if you’re particularly tall, you’ll be happy to know that the bag also has adjustable load lifters and a sternum strap that can be adjusted to different heights.

Plus, at just 2.6lb, it won’t weigh you down on long days of exploring.

But it’s not just tall people who will love this backpack—it’s also got a lot of great features that everyone will appreciate. For example, it has a classic 3-ZIP design that makes it easy to access the interior of the backpack without having to take everything out.

There are also several pockets (including a dedicated, padded compartment that fits a 15” laptop and a document/tablet sleeve pocket) so you can keep all of your belongings organized and within reach.

Reviews on the bag are mostly positive, and as an example, Ticozolano gushed that “This product is better than I thought, the quality of the product is unmatched, the texture of the fabric feels quite resistant for all elements, has enough space for all my gear, the computer sleeve is robust enough to keep it safe in case of a vertical fall, the packaging was excellent as well…the 3-zipper design is amazing and unique. Thank you MR for building this backpack.”

I guess I also have to thank Mystery Ranch for building this sturdy backpack as well.

What we also love

The Urban Assault 24 is made from durable 500D Cordura material with YKK zippers, so you know it’s built to last.

And finally, its clean silhouette and functional design make it perfect for work, school, and even hiking and camping trips.

What’s not great

The Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24 is a great backpack for day hikes and quick urban excursions, but Carryology says it’s not so great for carrying a lot of bulky items.

With a 24L carrying capacity, there’s a limit to the number of items it can carry.

Overall, the Urban Assault 24 is a well-made backpack that’s perfect for shorter trips.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people

This category will concentrate on the best duffel that suits your frame and prevents you from hunching over.

These duffels are practical and comfortable for tall individuals thanks to features like extra-high handles and adjustable straps.

I have reviewed the best carry-on luggage for tall folks below:

eBags Mother Lode 21″ Rolling Duffel

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: eBags Mother Lode 21″ Carry-On Rolling Duffel
Credit: ebags.com

Summary: A lightweight, durable, and functional rolling duffel bag.

This eBags rolling duffel bag comes with an extra-tall telescoping handle that extends up to 45.5 inches and has three height settings, allowing you to find the best position for pushing it along without strain or discomfort.

“I also like the fact that the rolling handle extends much further for us taller people. This made it much easier to maneuver while at the airport. I wasn’t hunching down to reach the roller bar ” said one tall user on Amazon who has been impressed with this bag for over 7 years.

This means you won’t have to stoop to pull it across the floor all the time. Trust me when I say that your back (and sanity) will thank you!

Aside from its height, the Mother Lode 21″ Roller Duffel has several other handy features.

The luggage’s smooth, easy-to-roll wheels allow for effortless travel throughout the airport, and the front feet are designed to keep the suitcase from tipping over even when fully loaded. It also has top, bottom, and side carry handles, making it easy to grab and lift into a car or plane, or train compartment.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: eBags Mother Lode 21″ Carry-On Rolling Duffel

What we also love

You’ll be able to pack everything you need and more, whether you’re going on a weekend trip or a longer trip, thanks to its many internal and external pockets, as well as the fact that the main compartment can be expanded by an extra 1.5-inches if you need to store more than you anticipated.

To collaborate on this, I want you to read a review by another user who said:  “This bag was perfect as a carry-on for a long international flight. Plenty of easy access pockets on the outside for stuff I wanted to have within reach during the flight, with lots of room on the inside for the things I don’t like to pack in my checked luggage. For the trip back home, it expanded to hold the extra things I purchased on vacation. I checked it for the return trip and it held up beautifully.”

What’s not great

The eBags Mother Lode 21″ Carry-On Rolling Duffel measures 21.5″ x 15″ x 9,” which means it may be too large for some airlines to accept as a carry-on. Before packing, check with your airline.

Overall, eBags’ Mother Lode 21″ Roller Duffel is suitable for tall travelers. It is tall enough to be easily pulled, spacious enough to store all of your necessities, and packed with organizational features to make your journeys more convenient.

North Face Base Camp Small Duffel

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: North Face Base Camp Duffel – Small
Credit: thenorthface.com

Summary: a duffel bag that’s not only practical but also fashionable and long-lasting.

The Base Camp duffel from The North Face, which has been a fan favorite since it was first released in 1986, is a terrific choice for a bag that can handle anything from travel to, well, base camp.

But what really makes this bag the ideal option for those of us who are tall are its adjustable sternum strap and removable, alpine-cut shoulder straps. This makes it possible to adjust the bag to fit your height and body shape without feeling like you’re carrying a child’s backpack.

Still on those straps, considering that they are alpine-cut, even if you are walking for miles, they won’t slide or slip off your shoulder as you are carrying the duffel.

Moreover, this bag is adaptable and can be worn as a duffel or a backpack by simply adjusting the straps.

And with a 50L capacity, it can comfortably hold all of your needs wherever you’re going. Plus its dimensions of 13″ x 21″ x 13″ make it the perfect carry-on bag size for those quick weekend travels.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: North Face Base Camp Duffel – Small

What we also love

I like how adaptable this bag is since you can use it for many different things, such as transporting gym equipment, storing gear for a weekend camping trip, or taking a weeklong vacation. And even if you’re preparing for a strenuous activity, like hiking, the Base Camp duffel has you covered.

And that’s not even mentioning the bag’s excellent quality.

It is made of durable 840D recycled ballistic nylon that has had a DWR treatment to keep moisture out, making it tough enough to handle whatever activities you have planned. Even though it is not waterproof like the YETI and SealLine models, the North Face Base Camp Duffel is still able to keep your belongings dry in light to moderate rain.

Also, you can choose a design that appeals to you thanks to the variety of color options, which range from plain black to combinations of vivid yellow.

What’s not great

One of The North Face Base Camp Duffel’s main flaws, which can make it difficult to carry when it is loaded with supplies, is the absence of hip straps. Also, Divein.com points out that there aren’t many inner pockets, which can make it challenging to keep your backpack organized.

In the end, the Base Camp Duffel is a great option if you want a versatile pack for people who are gifted with height without making many compromises in terms of durability and usefulness.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Osprey Transporter duffel 40L

Summary: A rugged and weather-resistant duffel that won’t weigh you down.

It’s always fun to be pleasantly surprised by a piece of gear, and Osprey’s Transporter duffel did just that. At first glance—or third—the bag looks nothing like a super versatile piece that’ll be loved by tall folks.

But let me tell you that I have been impressed by a lot of features that make this bag ideal for tall travelers.

First, the full yoke and contoured harness straps distribute weight evenly so it’s more comfortable to carry, especially for those of us who are tall and might struggle with bags that put all the weight on our shoulders.

The sternum strap is also adjustable, so you can find the perfect fit, and keep the bag securely in place.

Another thing to like about this duffel apart is its four padded webbing handles, which make it easy to grab and go from any angle. This is a particularly useful feature for tall folks who might need to lift the bag higher to get it off the ground.

But what really seals the deal for me is the bag’s durability. Made from tough, bluesign-approved recycled polyester, and featuring a rugged, weather-resistant design, this duffel is built to last.

You can rest assured that it will stand up to whatever adventures you have in store, whether that’s a weekend camping trip or a cross-country flight.

Best carry-on luggage for tall people: Osprey Transporter duffel 40L

What we also love
And with a 40L carrying capacity and plenty of pockets for organizing your gear, this duffel is also super versatile.

As an example, an Amazon customer said “I recently purchased this bag for a week long trip to Florida. Not only was I able to fill it with a weeks worth of clothes but I also managed to get a full frame SLR, spare lens, and snorkel gear packed into it!”

Still on its versatility, another said that “the size is perfect and can be used for any type of excursion ranging from air travel( meets carry on criteria) to multi-day treks.”

As such, I would recommend it for short trips or as a companion on longer journeys with the use of packing cubes, and at only 2.5 lbs, you can be sure it won’t weigh you down.

What’s not great

While I’m a big fan of the Transporter duffel from Osprey, you must be aware of the inherent compromises.

In particular, there is no water bottle pocket or laptop compartment in this bag, which can be a downside if you need to carry your computer with you. Second, some users and reviewers like onebagtravels.com and Packhacker.com have noted that there is no hip belt or back padding, which can make it uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

The back panel is also not ventilated, so it can be sweaty and uncomfortable to carry in hot weather.

Despite these drawbacks, the Osprey Transporter duffel 40L is a great option for those looking for a lightweight and durable duffel bag for those blessed with height.

Summary: perfect for those who need to pack a lot but still want to be able to stay organized.

The Dakine Split Roller is a great option for taller people who are looking for a roller bag that’s easy to maneuver.

This bag has a premium retractable handle and reinforced urethane wheels that make it easy to roll around, even when the bag is fully packed.

It’s also perfect for those who need to pack a lot but still wants to be able to stay organized.

At 85L, there’s plenty of room to pack everything you need for a long trip. Plus, its split-level design allows for easy access and organization to the different pockets and compartments of the bag.

It also has a lot of compartments and pockets, including an interior compartment that keeps dirty clothes/shoes separate.

What we also love

This best split roller luggage also has two defining features you’ll love.

It comes with mesh dividers that help maintain visibility while the collapsible Split-Wing feature lets you compress the bag for easy storage when not in use.

So whether you’re headed out for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, this expert-approved duffel won’t let you down.

What’s not great

This large roller bag from Dakine is spacious enough to hold all your belongings but it’s too big to qualify as a carry-on on an airplane. This is because it measures 30 x 14 x 13″, against the acceptable size of 22” x 14” 9”.

Some Amazon users have also complained that the Dakine Split Roller 85L which weighs 9lbs is heavy and exceeds airline carry-on restrictions.

So, if you’re planning to take this bag on an airplane, be sure to check with your airline beforehand to see if it meets their size and weight requirements.

FAQs

How can I make my luggage handle longer?

What is telescoping handle on luggage?

Most modern luggage has an extendable and retractable telescopic handle. As a result, moving the luggage—especially if it’s heavy—is easier.

The telescopic handle is frequently adjustable as well, allowing you to modify it to meet your height. And a lot of more modern versions come with an ergonomic grip that is easier to hold onto.

Can you replace a suitcase handle?

Of course, a suitcase’s handle can be replaced. There are numerous ways to go about it.

One approach is to remove the screws keeping the handle in place and then swap it out with a new one. Replacement handles are typically available at hardware stores.

Another method entails taking off the original handle and then using pliers to release the metal link that was keeping it in place. Once the original connector has been unscrewed, you can screw in a new one.

Last but not least, if you don’t feel comfortable doing all of this yourself, you can take your suitcase to a repair shop and have them replace the handle for you.

Air Travel Tips for Tall Travelers

Flying can be tough for tall travelers.

From having your knees jammed into the back of the seat in front of you, to not being able to recline your seat without making the person behind you uncomfortable. However, following these tips can help make it a bit more bearable.

Request an aisle or window seat when booking your flight

One of the most important things you can do when flying as a tall traveler is to book the right seat.

If you can, try to book an aisle or window seat in the exit row.

Not only will you have more legroom, but you’ll also be able to stretch out your arms and legs without bothering the person sitting next to you. If those seats are all taken or too expensive, don’t worry – any seat in the rows behind the exit row will likely have more legroom than average, too.

Just avoid the very back of the plane – those seats often have less legroom due to the curvature of the fuselage.

Fly with airlines that offer lots of legroom

There are some tall-people-friendly airlines with lots of legroom.

For instance, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways offer 32 inches of legroom, while Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines offer something between 31-32 inches.

Bring a neck pillow

A neck pillow will help you get some rest on your flight, even if you can’t fully recline your seat.

It’s also helpful if you tend to get motion sickness when flying.

Wear comfortable clothes

Since you’re going to be sitting in a confined space for a long time, make sure you’re wearing clothes that won’t make you too hot or too cold and that won’t be uncomfortable after a few hours.

You might also want to consider wearing compression socks or stockings.

They’re great for preventing blood clots and keeping your legs feeling fresh during long flights.

And if you tend to get cold on planes, bring along a scarf or pashmina – they double as blankets and can help you stay warm without having to use the air conditioning vents directly above your seat.

Drink plenty of water

In particular, when traveling, it’s important to stay hydrated.

Because the air in airline cabins is so dry, drink lots of water and avoid alcohol to avoid being dehydrated.

Get up and move around as much as possible

Try to stand up and move about at least once every hour because being still for an extended time might cause your muscles to cramp.

If you can’t, perform some simple stretching exercises while seated.

Keep your mind occupied

Flying can be tedious, especially if you’re stuck in a middle seat with nothing to do but read or stare at the CRT TV monitors that show outdated movies.

To make flying more bearable, bring along something to keep your mind occupied – we recommend books, magazines, Sudoku puzzles, and portable game consoles like the Nintendo Switch.

And if all else fails and you find yourself getting bored, just strike up a conversation with your seatmate – you never know, they might turn out to be interesting after all!

  1. I am tall, so I often have those problems you describe, especially because I live in a country where tall women are a little “unusual.” So, most clothes are too short and I order on Amazon or go to boutiques.
The TravelPro Maxlite Air Compact looks great and I like the color. Kowing my luck, I’ll probably get issues with the zippers which would be a shame. Besides the zipper issue I really like this travel-on suitcase. There are also other ones that look fantastic and are reasonably priced, like the Tasmania case for example, that one is under $100US.
This information is really good to know. Next time I travel I’ll need a new suitcase, I’ll come looking here 🙂

  4. Each suitcase is good in its own special way, for example, the Tom Bihn synapse, which offers a lifetime guarantee, or the Tasmania suitcase due to its affordable price and 100% polycarbonate. I will have to review more to make a final decision. I’m sure this great article will benefit many as it did me. 🙂

  7. Hi Femi and thank you for this extensive overview of luggage for tall people!

Although I consider myself tall, I never realised that I am a special category for which products have to be made 🙂 I choose my travel luggage by checking if it is good quality, that the handle goes comfortably to my arm and that I like the color!

However, I do understand that for people probably even taller than me, my criteria might not be sufficient.

I would also vouch for the window seat. because I simply love the views from the windows of an airplane and I would not want to miss a minute of it, apart from being able to stretch my legs.

Great article, keep up the good work!
