Summary: The Yeti 24 backpack cooler is built for durability and comfort, and features excellent insulation to keep your drinks and food chilled all day long.

When it comes to backpack coolers, the YETI Hopper Backflip 24 is one of the most trusted and reliable options on the market.

Whether you’re planning a day hike or a week-long camping trip, this Hopper Backflip 24 is a great choice for keeping your refreshments close at hand.

Made with a hard-wearing Dryhide Shell, the exterior can withstand scratches, water, punctures, mildew, and even the sun’s UV rays such that you can trust it to hold up for years.

Most importantly, the level of ice retention of the pack is top-notch and better than most.

You wouldn’t have to worry about your food or drinks, because the inside is well insulated with closed-cell rubber foams that stay cold as long as possible.

Many tests have been done on Yeti backpacks cooler that proves that you can expect 2-3 days of ice retention from the BackFlip 24.

You won’t have to worry about leaks either.

Simply because Yeti backpack coolers do not disappoint, this cooler backpack is leak-proof and waterproof, courtesy of its Hydrolock zipper.

And this pack is tall and wide enough to accommodate 18 cans of beer or 25 pounds of ice.

What we also love

Positively reviewed also, buyers have raved about this product, with only a few of them taking exception to its premium and steep price.

Aside from its near-perfect insulation, it is backed with a lifetime warranty and a reputation from a solid brand, which goes to show that the Yeti Backpack 24 is a sure deal if you can afford it.

What’s not great

The major disadvantage of the Backflip 24 is that it lacks external dry pockets, which makes it inconvenient for carrying other items like your phone, electronics, snacks, etc.

Pros

  • High quality
  • Leak proof & waterproof
  • 2-3 days of ice retention
  • Lifetime warranty
  • 24-litres spacious capacity

 Cons

  • Expensive
  • Lacks external pockets

Best insulated: IceMule Boss 30L Backpack Cooler

Best Backpack Coolers: IceMule Boss 30L Backpack Cooler
Credit: icemulecoolers.com

Summary: If you’re looking for a backpack cooler that can go the distance, the IceMule Boss 30L is one of the best on the market.

The IceMule Boss 30L Backpack Cooler is a top-of-the-line backpack cooler that offers superior performance and durability.

It is made with high-quality materials and construction, and it shows in its ability to keep ice cold for hours on end.

It has a central cooler compartment with a rectangular design and 1.2″ closed-cell PolarLayer XT insulation foam.

This means that it can hold ice for up to 3 days and has a 30L capacity that can hold roughly 24 cans + ice.

The Icemule backpack cooler is therefore perfect for any group outing or outdoor activity– from camping and fishing to hiking and biking.

Also, the Boss is very organized.

Unlike Yeti Coolers backpacks, the Icemule backpack cooler has bungee cords and 3 exterior compartments that are all waterproof!

This means you’ll have the storage for your phone, electronics, sandwiches, etc. while keeping them separated from other cold items.

Also, most customer reviews have it that this pack is super comfortable.

The Boss comes equipped with thick padded shoulder straps, ventilated back, a well-padded hip belt as well a sternum strap that makes it comfortable to carry, even when fully loaded.

What we also love

I also like that this backpack keeps its shape even when not full, which is a huge advantage over cheaper backpack coolers on the market.

The cooler backpack features a roll-down design.

While the roll-down design may seem a bit strange (might take a bit of getting used to), it helps to keep the central compartment watertight and prevents any leakage from occurring.

What’s not great

The Boss can get bulky and heavy as an everyday pack, especially when at full capacity.

And I saw some customer reviews saying the zippers are stiff. But when the zippers are lubed up, they become easy to pull.

Overall, the IceMule Boss 30L Backpack Cooler is one of the best backpack coolers that does its job well.

Pros

  • Durable design
  • Super comfortable to carry when full
  • Good capacity

Cons

  • Can be heavy and bulky when loaded out
  • Zippers are sometimes stiff when not lubed up

Summary: The Trooper 20 may have a burly frame, but it is a well-made cooler backpack that offers good insulation for up to 2 days.

The OtterBox Trooper 20 is a heavy-duty cooler backpack that you can rely on to keep your content well insulated for hours while you enjoy the great outdoors.

The exterior of this cooler is made with TPU laminated heavy-duty nylon, which helps to waterproof and strengthen it against UVS, punctures, and chemicals.

So you see, this bad boy is not only water-resistant but also puncture-resistant!

The ice retention on this bad boy is great!

The lid, walls, and base are very thickly insulated to ensure that the cold stays in.

Plus, it has an airtight seal for perfect insulation- so you can enjoy 2 or even 3 days’ worth of icy goodness without worrying about any leaks.

One of the best things about the Trooper 20 is the easy to open lid.

Its unique, plastic flip-top lid and latch not only make the cooler look unique but also allow for easy loading and easy access to items inside the cooler.

This cooler backpack also has an external pocket big enough to fit your phone and wallet, nutrition bars, etc.

Also, it features 2 wide carrying straps and 2 side handles, so you can carry the backpack cooler most conveniently.

What’s not great

But when it comes to carrying comfort, you should, however, know some reviewers complained that the Trooper 20 is not as comfortable or flexible to carry around.

This is due to its rigid and boxy shape.

Pros

  • Unique leak-resistant lid
  • Good insulation for up to 2 days
  • External pocket

Cons

  • Rigid shape
  • Pricey

Credit: tourit.com

Summary: The Tourit backpack cooler is very affordable, comfortable, and well insulated.

Don’t let the cheap price tag fool you: This top-quality outdoor is currently Amazon’s best seller for a reason.

It has all of the high-performance qualities that the best backpack coolers have but in an effortless and comfortable style.

Since the inside is deep and waterproofed, you can transport your edible items that you need to be cold for hours in the PEVA lined interior (with Freeze Packs).

Even though this bag is spacious, reviewers have however said it can comfortably hold up to 20 cans, instead of the 30 cans as advertised on their website.

But unlike the more expensive YETI Hopper, the TOURIT Backpack Cooler boasts multiple pockets for easy storage.

What we also like

There is a main storage compartment, as well as two side mesh pockets and two large front zipper pockets where you can keep your utensils.

In addition, you get a zipper pocket on the lid, one mesh pocket, and one beer opener on the strap.

Light and comfortable, this backpack features padded shoulder straps and thick padding on the back so that you enjoy every bit of the moment on the road.

What’s not great

Note that this is more of a lunch or day pack and not for heavy outdoor activities because it can only keep food cold/hot for 16 hours or less.

PRO TIPS: However, you should use freeze packs, rather than putting ice into the cooler directly to avoid damaging the waterproof material.

Pros

  • Comfortable and roomy
  • Easy access to items
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Freeze packs instead of actual ice is recommended
  • The pack is not leakproof

With this beauty, you can always step out in style.

What’s not great

The only complaint about the Axis is its lack of well-padded shoulder straps which causes an uncomfortable weight distribution across your back when carrying heavy loads and can make long walks more difficult than they need to be.

Pros

  • Stylish and convenient
  • Water-resistant interior

Summary: The Coleman 24 Cooler backpack is minimalistic, practical, and with reasonable insulation.

Coleman’s 24-Can Cooler Bag is great for keeping your food and drinks cold while on the go.

Featuring a practical weight and minimalistic design, the bag claims to be able to keep your goods cold for up to 34 hours and hold up to 24 cans.

Nevertheless, the bag doesn’t have the perfect insulation system as it can only retain ice for just a few hours due to the thin insulation in the interior, according to some reviewers on Amazon.

That being said, what makes it a gamechanger is its combination of convenience and portability.

You can comfortably carry an entire day’s worth of food and drink on your back thanks to the adjustable padded shoulder straps.

If you won’t feel like backing your bag, the top handle is well padded to survive the weight of carrying.

Whether you’re headed to a concert, picnics, beach, or any other outdoor adventure, the Grateful Dead Dancing Bears Daytripper backpack will make sure you’re prepared with everything you need.

What’s not great

The major complaint about this backpack cooler is that the top of the cooler doesn’t close properly, and if it falls off or gets knocked over by an unsuspecting child then all its contents could spill out onto whatever surface is below.

This also means less insulation once the flap is not well latched.

It could have been better if the cooler tip has a zipper to help retain insulation and the content of the bag.

Buyer’s Guide: How to choose the best backpack coolers in 2023

Best Backpack Coolers: OlarHike Cooler Backpack

When looking for the best backpacks coolers in 2023, here are some important factors you need to consider before making a final decision.

Insulation and ice retention

Best Backpack Coolers: A man taking out fish from a YETI Cooler Backpack
Credit: yeti.com

This is arguably the most important factor to consider when choosing a backpack cooler.

Make sure to choose a backpack cooler with thick insulation and a good seal to keep your contents cold for hours (or even days).

The best backpack coolers use a thick layer of foam insulation to keep things cold. The thicker the insulation, the longer your ice will last.

But it’s not just about thickness – it’s also important to make sure the insulation is even and consistent throughout the cooler.

That way, you’ll get maximum ice retention and your food will stay nice and cold.

If there are any weak spots or gaps in the insulation, your ice will melt faster.

The bottom line is that if you want your backpack cooler to perform its best, you need to pay attention to both the thickness and evenness of the foam insulation.

So if you’re looking for the best backpack coolers that will keep your food and drinks chilled all day long, insulation is key!

Size & capacity

Best Backpack Coolers: Corkcicle Eola Bucket Cooler Backpack dimensions
Credit:corkcicle.com

Size and capacity are important in the best backpack coolers because you want to make sure you have the right size for your needs.

This is crucial because you don’t want to have to carry more than one backpack cooler if you’re going on a long trip.

You want to make sure that the backpack cooler you go for can fit all of the food, cans, or bottles that you need to keep cold.

Also, the bag should still have the space to fit the extra ice you need to keep your drinks cold for longer.

For instance, a small backpack cooler like the Eola Bucket Cooler bag might be good for holding 12 cans of beers or a few sandwiches, while a larger one like the IceMule Boss 30L could hold up to 24 cans with enough room left over for some ice.

Having a bigger backpack cooler also means that you don’t have to stop and refill it as often, which can be especially helpful on long hikes.

The storage capacity should be right for your adventure and fit all the items you would take along, whether that is a group hike or a two-person picnic outing.

Pockets & Compartments

Best Backpack Coolers: Tourit Backpack Cooler with different pockets
Credit: tourit.com

There are a few reasons why compartments and pockets are important in the best backpack coolers.

First, they provide a way to keep things organized.

You can put your dry goods in one compartment, and your wet goods in another.

This helps to keep things from getting mixed up and makes it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Second, compartments and pockets help to keep things from moving around too much.

This is especially important if you’re carrying sensitive items like electronics or glassware.

Finally, exterior pockets are great for storing things like water bottles, maps, sunscreen, and snacks.

This keeps them within easy reach and helps to balance the weight of the backpack evenly.

Fit & comfort

Best Backpack Coolers: IceMule Boss 30L Backpack Cooler back view
Credit: icemulecoolers.com

There are a few reasons why the fit and comfort of backpacks coolers should play a major determinant in your buying decision.

The first is that backpacks coolers are not as comfortable as regular packs because they are heavier, especially if you tend to carry a lot of gear or food.

As a result, you should look for packs that have hip and chest straps that can help distribute the weight more evenly.

Additionally, ergonomic features like padding in the shoulder straps and ventilation in the back panel can help make them more comfortable to wear for longer periods.

You also want a pack that is contoured to your body to provide adequate support and not cause as much strain on your back and shoulders.

So if you’re looking for a backpack cooler that will be comfortable to wear on long hikes or extended camping trips, be sure to look for one with the features above.

Price

Some of the best backpack coolers are expensive, while others are very affordable.

The good thing is that this review includes options to suit every budget.

The high-end options may be expensive, but they are more durable, and with solid insulation that lasts hours or even days.

And if you’re looking for budget-friendly best backpack coolers on Amazon or Target that are just as capable as some of the pricier options, offerings from brands like TOURIT, Igloo, Coleman, and others have got you.

Interestingly, most of the affordable ones reviewed here are Amazon bestsellers, with very positive ratings and reviews, so you know you are in good hands.

Whatever is your budget, there’s something for you.

How many drinks can fit in a backpack cooler?

Best Backpack Coolers: OlarHike Cooler Backpack
Credit: Amazon

It depends on the size of the backpack cooler, the shape of the drinks, and how much ice is used.

A standard-sized backpack cooler can typically accommodate around six 12 oz. cans or four 16 oz. bottles.

For instance, the 20L Rockbros waterproof backpack can fit at least 36 cans with ice, while the Corkcicle Eola Bucket bag can hold either 12 cans or eight cans and two wine bottles.

Also keep in mind that if more drinks are added, the space for ice will be reduced, resulting in less cooling power.

For best results, try to pack drinks that are as compact as possible and use a lot of ice to help keep everything cold for longer.

Are backpack coolers heavy?

Best Backpack Coolers: a man carrying a Tourit Cygnini Cooler Backpack

Yes, backpack coolers can be quite heavy.

This is because they are designed to hold a lot of ice, drinks, and food – items that are all quite heavy on their own.

Additionally, the insulation and thick materials that make up the cooler add weight as well.

So, if you’re planning on bringing a lot of stuff with you on your hike or camping trip, be prepared for your backpack to be significantly heavier than usual.

What are the loops on a backpack cooler for?

Best Backpack Coolers: Piscifun Backpack Cooler Insulated 22L with loops

The loops on the best backpack coolers are meant for clipping extra gear in place.

This can be useful for attaching a water bottle, small blanket, a flashlight, or even a small pouch onto the outside of the bag so it’s within easy reach.

Of course, the number and size of loops will differ from one backpack cooler to the other.

But they all serve the same purpose – giving you some extra storage options while on the go.

Additionally, the loops can be used to attach the backpack cooler to other larger bags or objects, providing extra security and stability.

  1. Hi Femi – I’m so glad to see that there are waterproof backpack coolers now!

There is nothing worse than swimming from the boat to the shore with the cooler – only to find that the sandwiches are soaking wet with salt water when you get there. It really ruins the picnic!

So far, we’ve always ended up having to separate the things that can get wet (bottles of wine, tins of softdrink, sealed packages) from the things that can’t (sandwiches, sausage rolls, bags of nuts and fruit), that then have to go into a drybag. But we always seem to end up with something sneaking into the wrong bag – or having to repack again when we get to shore to prevent spoilage.

I need to dig into these more – and pick the one that will float the best so I can tow it while swimming!

Thanks for this! You’ve made my summer!

  2. You have excellently presented these 11 backpack coolers and defined them according to the needs of individuals with pros and cons. Honestly, it would be hard to decide on a favorite or the most suitable one because the competitiveness of the offer is so obvious.
I currently have one of the TOURITs at home, it is a bit smaller, but it meets my needs so far, and it also had a very reasonable price.
    Kind regards,
    Nina

They seem they can take a beating in the woods or traveling outdoors and we go to the lakes so are being waterproof is a plus.
There are so many to choose from we are going to bookmark this for next time.

  4. This is a big list of backpack coolers, now I don’t know which one to choose 😉 I didn’t even know that backpack coolers existed. I always thought that you just had to buy a cooler from the store and that was it, but they do not keep drinks and food cold for long and ice melts quickly.
The insulation time of these backpack coolers is way longer, especially the first one, the Yeti Hopper Backflip, that was the one that really got my attention but the price is indeed a little steep.
I also like the dancing Bears backpack and the last one, the Lightweight.
Even though I don’t go camping a lot, these backpack coolers are great to have for the garden during summer. This might be something I’d consider buying for this upcoming summer.

  5. What a great list of backpack coolers! My elder daughter always asks me to go to Disneyland with her and her 2 yrs old sister. But my wife and I find it very difficult to find a perfect backpack cooler to store all the toddler’s stuff, especially the breast milk. Thanks for your recommendation of the Petunia Pickle Bottom Axis backpack. I do believe we finally found a perfect one to store all the baby’s stuff and I can finally play with my children at Disneyland the entire day.
