Best overrall: J World New York Kids’ Duet Backpack
Summary: Lightweight and simply designed, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with the J World New York Kids‘ Backpack.
Hate sadly squished and crushed food?
Well, there’s a reason the J World New York Kid Backpack tops the list of my best backpacks with detachable lunch box. This backpack features a well-insulated lunch box that can hold a sandwich, snacks, and drink.
Even better, the box is detachable and comes with two buckles and Velcro so you can attach it to the front of your backpack. Inside the box is a spacious space with an internal mesh pocket to keep your napkins/utensils.
It’s made from water-resistant polyester and comes equipped with S-shaped adjustable shoulder straps and a padded back, so your child will be comfortable even when wearing the backpack for extended periods of time.
Also, I love how roomy it is.
You can fit so much into this – a 14inch laptop, a tablet, two water bottles, books, folders, and more. Plus, a front utility pocket is great for storing and organizing smaller must-haves, like pencils, pens, and highlighters.
What we also like
Designed for tweens and toddlers (4-12 years), the J World pack is available in a wide variety of colors, so your kid will find what suits their styles.
And since the backpack weighs a mere 1lb while the lunch box comes in at just 0.45 lb (when empty), it’s not the kind of backpack that will weigh your little one down.
What we don’t like
The only complaint is that the lunch box doesn’t have many compartments.
Most Versatile: King Kong Zone25 Backpack
Summary: The Zone25 is a gym bag, meal prep backpack, and lunch box rolled into one.
The ZONE25 is a backpack designed for meal prepping. However, it has been found to work well as a lunch box pack, and a gym bag. It allows you have easy access to quality food and hydration, thanks to a well-insulated lunch box. The bag is made to fit a ZONE insert (can fit a 6-pack of cans), two meal containers, and an ice pack to keep things cool.
It keeps meals cold and fresh for 6-12 hours!
And you won’t have to worry about leaks either. This is because it uses food-grade TPU coated 1000d Nylon and close cell EVA insulation with leakproof Zippers for waterproof protection.
What we also like
This is a 25 liters bag with free space for you to organize your items however you like. You can remove the lunch box insert and just arrange the bucket-style compartment however you like. In addition to this, there is a top zippered pocket for your cutlery or napkins, a front compartment with two pen slips, and a well-padded 16” laptop compartment.
Still need extra storage?
By the sides of the backpack are strong straps with sturdy buckles with which you can attach large items like a blanket, towel or yoga mat. Better yet, the ergonomic shoulder straps and adjustable chest straps make it a breeze to carry.
What we don’t like
While the laptop compartment is padded and snug, it, however, doesn’t offer false bottom protection. So you may want to avoid accidental drops or avoid this bag altogether if you’re clumsy.
Best Rollie: J World Duo Rolling Backpack
Summary: The J World Duo Rolling Backpack gives you a backpack and wheeled luggage with a lunchbox in one package!
For the best in quality, performance, and aesthetics, the winner is without a doubt the J World Duo Rolling Backpack. It is one of the best backpacks with detachable lunch box because it features a matching kid’s lunch bag clipped securely to the front of the backpack.
Also, the inside of the box is insulated and is spacious enough to hold a sandwich, snacks, and drink.
It also has a spacious compartment and pockets, including a tablet sleeve, two side pockets, a front pocket plus an internal organizer for smaller items to help you stay organized.
I like that it is convertible.
There’s the option to carry it on the back like a backpack or roll it on wheels to relieve the weight from kids’ backs. And the wheels are smooth-rolling, noiseless, and are compatible with sidewalks, paths, and airplane aisles.
What we also like
I like that the shoulder straps are well padded for carrying comfort and can be tucked away when used as a wheeled travel bag. Plus, it is a versatile bag great for carrying heavy items to school or to lectures in college.
What we don’t like
The design is best suited for students than adults.
For Men: Matein Lunch Backpack
Summary: The Matein Backpack can fit a lot, and the waterproof outer will keep what’s inside safe.
Unlike the other backpacks I talked about above, this one doesn’t come with a detachable lunch box. Instead, it has an insulated thermal pocket that keeps your food either cool or warm, perfect for even really long 12-hour trips.
One person even said they could put 3 Tupperware containers inside, and someone else mentioned fitting 4 frozen water bottles, a cold water bottle, a condiment, lunch meat, and an applesauce cup in the cooler.
But what if you don’t need to carry a lot of ice or drinks? Well, this backpack can hold a lot of things with its big 40-liter size. There’s a padded section for a big 17-inch laptop, two small pockets in the front for little things, two stretchy side pockets for drinks, and a secret back pocket to keep your valuable things safe.
It’s so spacious that a person who bought it on Amazon said they could easily pack for a 4-night trip! If that doesn’t sound amazing, I’m not sure what will. Isn’t that impressive?
What we also like
Because it doesn’t seem like a regular cooler backpack, I really like that you can use this Matein bag for whatever you need – like a bag for your laptop, for work, or even as a carry-on while traveling. And the best part is, this backpack can handle water and scratches, so you don’t need to worry about your things getting wet or damaged.
What we don’t like
One issue with this bag is that it can really heavy and uncomfortable to wear once you’ve put in your lunch, laptop, and other things. And remember, because it’s a large backpack, it might look quite big on you, especially if you are short or have a small frame.
For Women: Matein Insulated Cooler Backpack
Summary: If you want an organized pack you can bring into the office, the Matein backpack would be just what you need.
Another option from Matein, I know! Well, if the reviews on Amazon are anything to go by, it seems the brand knows a thing or two about how to make the backpacks with detachable lunch box.
This one is split into two parts – there’s a storage section at the top, and a separate section at the bottom where you can put your lunch. Inside the lunch compartment, things stay warm or cold for about 2-4 hours, thanks to the insulation. The main part of the backpack has plenty of space and pockets for all your other stuff, including a spot for a laptop up to 15.6 inches.
And you know what? This bag looks really professional and is super useful for all sorts of things. I would think that unless your food has a strong aroma, no one will even know you’re carrying a lunch bag unless you tell them.
In fact, I’ve read reviews from women who’ve used this bag for work, school, traveling, and more! An Amazon shopper even said they were tired of juggling a purse, laptop bag, and lunch bag every week.
They found that this bag can hold their computer, a headset and base, snacks, wallet, keys, bottled water, a can of soda, and even a sandwich or food container. And guess what? There was still more room left! This mean no more carrying a laptop bag or a purse along with a separate lunchbox.
What we also like
You’ll like to know that this backpack is versatile. You can wear it on your back like a backpack, or hold it like a tote bag when you want your shoulders to rest. Plus the comfy and cushiony shoulder straps make carrying it super easy. And, there’s a USB charging port, so you can keep your power up while you’re out and about.
What we don’t like
Some people have said that the special insulated part of this backpack isn’t water resistant and can’t even keep your food cool for a long time. One reviewer was sad that the ice packs and frozen water bottles they put in there melted before lunchtime.
Best for kids: Marvel Avengers Backpack
Summary: The Marvel Avengers Backpack stands out for its eye-catching, artistic designs.
The Marvel Avengers backpack spots a cool aesthetics that might make your kiddo actually excited to go to classes. (No promises though!) This little guy also has a detachable lunch box so you won’t need to worry about your kindergartner misplacing their snacks during breaks and lunchtime.
Best for preschoolers and kindergarteners, the exterior is made from durable canvas with a measurement of 15 x 11 x 5 inches.
What we also like
Also, its compact size and padded shoulder straps make it extra cozy for their tiny frames. Keep in mind though that it doesn’t have a breathable mesh lining for breathability.
What we don’t like
It is the only lunch box on this list of the best backpacks with detachable lunch box that is not insulated at all. It is only meant to store your kid’s lunch, and nothing more.
Best for your dog: Industrial Puppy Service Dog Vest with detachable backpack
Summary: A cute backpack for your pup to carry some of its own food, water, and gear.
Let your dog into the fun with a snug and detachable backpack from Industrial Puppy. This 2-in-1 combo bag doesn’t only help you identify your dog, but also serves as a dog pack carrier. It’s the perfect size for your dog’s treats, medicines, ADA cards, or extra supplies.
My favorite part is that it is available in four different sizes, so you can better choose the right fit for your large or small breeds of precious pup.
What we also like
The pack comes in bright colors and has a reflective strip so you can see your dog better when the sun starts to set.
Also, it is a well-made bag. It is made with heavy-duty, double-stitched nylon along with sturdy zippers and secure stitching on the handle and leash attachment.
What we don’t like
When the vest is worn for prolonged hours, it becomes uncomfortable for your dog.
Best for your Laptop: Slotra 17inch Laptop Backpack
Summary: The Slotra Laptop Backpack is for urban warriors looking for a sleek design without sacrificing functionality.
Because it can get tiring having to drag a lunch box along with your loaded backpack, the Slotra Laptop Backpack comes to the rescue. A solid representation of one of the best backpacks with detachable lunch box, it is designed to offer optimal protection to your tech while keeping your lunch fresh.
The lunch box is insulated and there’s a separated compartment to store it.
For your tech, there’s a separated easy access side entry back laptop compartment that can fit a 15.6inch laptop. Also, the 40-liter bag has all the room and pockets you need for your clothes, iPad, books, key, cell phone, wallet, water bottle, umbrella, toiletries, etc.
What we also like
It also has a USB charging port built-in. This way, you can charge your phone without having to hold your power bank in your other hand. This is a nice feature for those frequently on the move, such as busy professionals or students.
In addition, the exterior is made with water-repellent nylon fabric with padded shoulder straps. So, you won’t have to worry about rain or discomfort.
What we don’t like
Contrary to its name, the Slotra 17inch Laptop Backpack cannot fit a 17inch laptop, only a 15.6inch laptop.
Best budget: Fuel Backpack & Lunch Bag Bundle
Summary: Effortlessly cool, affordable, and spacious.
The Fuel Backpack is what you go for if your child needs more space for school essentials. It features a lunch bag, the main compartment, a front pocket for smaller items, and two water bottles pockets for hydration on the go.
I like the lunch bag for two reasons. One, it is well insulated, unlike the Avengers backpack. Secondly, it also has a handy outer compartment for storing the lunch bag, so you don’t have to worry about your child forgetting their lunch.
Best of all, it is very affordable (under $30!).
What we also like
The Fuel Backpack designs are beautiful and fun – there are 17 options to choose from! Also, the back panel is padded and the shoulder straps are adjustable for a snug and comfortable fit. Overall, I love this pack for its simplicity and the comfort that it provides, even while carrying a load.
What we don’t like
The backpack does not have compartments on the inside for better organization.
Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Backpacks with Detachable Lunch Box
To choose the best backpacks with detachable lunch box, consider the following:
Water-resistant fabric/insulated lunch box
If you want a backpack with a lunchbox where you can keep your food safe and cool, then it is very important that the lunchbox compartment is well-lined with dense insulators that prevent moisture seepage and maintain the temperature inside.
Also, the fabric should be water-resistant in case your water bottle or food container springs a leak.
Capacity
The whole point of backpacks with detachable lunch box is so you can comfortably carry your daily items and lunch in one carry.
So, it doesn’t make sense to get a pack that can’t hold much more than a few items. For your kids to take to school, a small backpack with 10-20 liters will do. But for adults or say you want a backpack for family outings like picnic, go for a large sized bag.
Depending on what you need, there are different sizes to choose from.
Weight
As a general rule of thumb, you should carry no more than 25% of your body weight.
Your kids especially should always carry lighter loads on their little backs. if it looks like he’s uncomfortable or overwhelmed with loads, be ready to take some of the load out and leave only the essentials. Remember the attached lunch box contributes to the weight also.
Comfort
It’s important to consider just how much you plan to pack inside your backpack and lunchbox in order to have an idea of how heavy it’ll be while you’re on the go.
Comfort is key, especially for a bag that you’ll wear on your back every day. Look for features like padded, adjustable straps, padded back panel, and mesh material with chest and sternum straps.
A backpack with these features is much more comfortable to log about with.
Quality
The best backpacks with detachable lunch box should be able to withstand the demands of constant use.
Whether you’ll always attach your lunch bag or leave it behind on most days, the backpack itself should follow you through wear and tear.
The backpack, as well as the lunchbox, should have good zippers, durable materials, easy-to-clean liners, and insulation and stitching, especially in high-stress areas.
Versatile
There’s a reason why it is a backpack that affords you the opportunity to either take or leave your lunch box behind.
On days when you need to carry more essentials than usual, you can decide to hold the lunchbox in your hands to avoid hauling around a heavy load.
Not to mention, it is good there are different sections and pockets for you to arrange your items, and not have to sacrifice such important space for a lunchbox.
Easy Access
Hooks and straps should really be convenient to attach the lunchbox or other items you know you’ll be needing at a moment’s notice.
There should also be handy pockets inside and outside the backpack for carrying important items like credit cards and cash.
Extras
These days, there are handy features that have been incorporated into the designs of a backpack like a charging port, a designated laptop sleeve, a water bottle holder, a key fob, a secret hidden compartment, a tech pocket, or weather-proof fabric for stormy weather.
Go for one with features that best suits your needs.

1 thought on “9 Best Backpacks with Detachable Lunch Box to Keep your Mealtime Fresh and Fun”
Backpacks have definitely come a long way in the last 10 years since I brought my last one. I never considered it a priority to have a detachable lunch box with a backpack, but now that you have pointed it out, it kind of makes sense to have one (unless I can get to a cafe every day.)
The laptop protective sleeve and USB charging port and other compartments were always more important for me. But now, when I buy my next backpack I will have to seriously consider whether I want a detachable lunch box or space or not.
Thanks for the information.
