5 Best travel backpacks for women

When it comes to choosing the best travel backpacks for women, there are a number of factors to consider. From ensuring that it fits and supports you correctly, to making sure that it’s the right size, colour and design, you will want to ensure that you’ve considered all the possibilities before making your decision.

What to expect in this piece…

In order to help you find the right backpack for you or perhaps a lady friend or loved one, I’ve compiled a list of what I consider to be the 5 best travel backpacks for women! The list is based on my experience and knowledge of each one. While they’re not ranked in any particular order, I’ve made the decision to include each of these bags in this list based on their comfort, size, purpose and style.

1. Osprey Fairview 70L Backpack– best for travelling the world

Osprey Fairview 70L

The Osprey Fairview 70L backpack has been tried and tested by many female travellers who have embarked on a trip around the world with this backpack in tow.

Its clever design is deceiving and it actually packs (pun intended!) a punch when it comes to carrying all your essentials around the world.

One thing that really makes the Osprey Fairview stand out from its competitors is its 13L detachable day pack; perfect for taking on long day trips where you’ll need all your travel essentials, but without the added weight of the entire 70 litres of storage.

This backpack is also renowned for its clever zip design, which allows you to completely pull the front of the bag down, for easy access to your belongings. The bag’s unique and flexible shape also means that it’s ideal for using packing cubes with; this is one of my favourite things about this backpack!

The only thing that I’m not too keen on with the Osprey Fairview is that it can be quite tricky to manoeuvre on to your own back once it’s fully packed; this is something I’ve struggled with in the past, but I’ve always got someone to help me if I’ve been struggling! Osprey is often cited as one of the best backpack brands for both women and men and their Fairview range provides comfort, style and space for all your backpacking needs!

  • Great for long term travel
  • Large and spacious
  • Detachable backpacks for added convenience

  • Not the cheapest option
  • Can be difficult to carry if it’s particularly full

2. Kelty Redwing 40 – best affordable travel backpack

If you’re looking for a backpack that offers all the essentials while being one of the most affordable options in the market, the Kelty Redwing 40 is the one for you!

The Redwing is also designed for added comfort, for any woman. With its Dynamic Airflow back panel ensuring your back is constantly supported, while its custom hip belt and shoulder straps provide that extra bit of comfort and support on your body.

This backpack is also home to numerous hidden pockets and storage compartments; something which I’ve been incredibly grateful for when I’m carrying all my travel essentials while on the road!

Whether you’re looking to embark on a weekend hiking trip, or you prefer to take backpacks on holiday with you instead of suitcases; the Kelty Redwing 40 is an excellent contestant when it comes to choosing the best travel backpacks for women.

  • Ideal for many uses and purposes
  • Very affordable compared to its competitors
  • Incredibly comfortable to wear

  • Not as great for long haul flights as there’s no way to add locks onto the straps
  • The straps can be quite untidy and may get caught on things

3. Deuter Airlite Backpack – best for day trips/hiking

A great option for a lightweight hiking/day trip backpack is the Deuter Airlite backpack; with only 20L of storage space inside, it’s not ideal for longer trips, but it’s perfect for grabbing all your things and taking them out on a day hike with you!

Its comfortable and durable design means that it will last you for many years to come and the positioning of the backpack means that it won’t make you sweaty; a common feature that many other backpacks need to take on board!

The Deuter Airlite backpack isn’t necessarily the most modern or stylish design but it’s an ideal day bag for long walks, day trips and hiking excursions!

  • Lightweight and versatile design
  • Perfect for taking on day trips/hikes
  • Very durable and long lasting

  • Not as affordable as some of its competitors
  • Not the most stylish design

4. Fjällräven Kanken Backpack – best lightweight backpack

Fjällräven Kanken Backpack – best lightweight backpack

If you’re in the market for an everyday use backpack that’s incredibly lightweight, then a Fjällräven Kanken backpack is the idyllic choice; this is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to lightweight backpacks!

Offering a vast range of bright colours and varying designs, Fjällräven is one of the leading providers in stylish and casual use backpacks for women.

Popular amongst women of all ages; ranging from teenagers looking for a fun and cool school backpack, to older generations needing a bag that will fit all their work essentials including their phone, purse, laptop and makeup bag; Fjällräven Kanken can cater to all your backpack needs!

  • Incredibly lightweight
  • Many different colours and designs
  • Great for women of all ages

  • Not as sturdy or durable as other backpacks
  • Not quite as spacious as other competitor day packs

5. Kate Spade New York French Stripe Backpack – most stylish design

The market for the most stylish backpacks is often said to be dominated by Kate Spade New York and just one look at any of their backpacks is sure to convince you of this fact.

This particular backpack is one of the best-selling backpack designs from Kate Spade; its simple but classic design, accompanied by the quintessentially elegant black and white stripes make this women’s backpack perfect for taking it from day to night.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to this backpack in that it’s much smaller than the others on this list so it’s not really ideal for long term travel or even day hikes. However, as an alternative to a handbag or a shoulder bag, this luxury Kate Spade backpack is my absolute favourite!

  • Beautiful design
  • Great for day and night use
  • Reputable and established brand

  • Rather expensive
  • Much smaller than the other backpacks

Closing remarks…

Each of these 5 travel backpacks for women have their own unique style, design and purpose.

My personal favourite is the Osprey Fairview 70L as it’s the best one in the market for long-term travel. It’s also the female version of that particular make from Osprey, meaning that you could get matching backpacks with your boyfriend/husband if they decided to purchase the male version!

  1. Hi! Excellent article!

Since I’m not much of a hiker, I definitely don’t need the first two options.  I like backpacks for a replacement for a purse.  They’re just so much easier if you have a lot of stuff, you know? Because of this, I’d prefer your last two suggestions, even if I can’t pronounce or spell the fourth one! LOL

I’m particularly partial to the look of the Kate Spade one, I think.

    Thanks so much!

    • Well said Jade.

When it comes to backpacks, there’s a tendency for some people to think solely in terms of hiking. But there are backpacks for different uses and for everyone. Hence, the reason for the last two recommendations 🙂

And yes – Kate Spade one is kinda special.

Lastly, thanks for your comment – really appreciate it.

  2. THIS IS GREAT! My wife loves going to Banff and Jasper of course us being from Alberta being in the mountains (or anywhere to backpack) a backpack is a MUST! You don’t want to carry too heavy and some of these are great! How long you are going for, and where will depend on how much you need to bring and what you can carry. Some like to set up tent wherever meaning their backpack will need to be pretty big! Some of them I will pass on to my wife!!

  3. I enjoyed this topic. I liked the variety that was included. When I traveled overseas I like to have a stylish one for running around town and a practical one for when I traveled to different parts. Easy to carry on a bus, taxi, or plane.  I think I would have made it 10 best backpacks just to give a little more variety.

    • Thank you for your comment AGray.

I’m pleased you find the piece as informative as it is enjoyable.

Sorry for the limited variety:) It was a struggle to decide a cut-off but I agree there are other brands out there worth of mention. Cath Kidston is one that will get in my top 10 for example. Is there a particular backpack you were hoping to see on the list?
